William Brooks Youth Fitness Program/Running with Rhett

WHAT:  This free program teaches our children that running is fun by increasing running distances very gradually and by providing special ribbon awards for cumulative distances achieved: 5 km (3.1 miles), 10 km (6.2 miles), half marathon (13.1 miles) and marathon (26.2 miles).  Details are described in the Training Program information. This program is open to all William Brooks students and their parents.  Participation in the Youth maraFUNrun is optional.  Training will initially be 30 minutes after school, Monday and Wednesday, gradually increasing to 1 hour at the end of the training.  There will be one run on your own (it can even be on Friday morning, at the Friday morning walk).

 

WHEN:  Start the program on October 18, seven weeks before the UCDavis Hospita 3.1-mile maraFUNrun on December 3, 2017.

 

Youth maraFUNrun

WHAT:  It is the final goal of the Youth Fitness Program: a 5k (3.1 mile) fun run!

WHEN:  Sunday, December 3, 2017, at 7:30 a.m., the same day as the California International Marathon.

WHERE:  Near the marathon finish line at 8th and Capitol Mall.

DETAILS:  Participation in this event is voluntary.  Transportation to and from the race and supervision at the       event will be the responsibility of the child’s parent or guardian.

  • The children finish the UCDavis Hospital maraFUNrun in time to watch the first marathoners finish; it is exciting for the children to see world class athletes perform.
  • Ribbons and special maraFUNrun T-shirts are awarded to all finishers. Those who complete both the Youth Fitness Program and maraFUNrun will be awarded a California International Marathon Fun Run medallion—and they will have earned it, because they will have run over 26.2 miles — a cumulative distance equal to a marathon!

Brooks Youth Fitness / Running with Rhett Program Training Schedule

Each student will be required to keep a log of when and how far they run on their own, to be signed off on by a parent and turned in on Monday.  This helps us know that your child is prepared for the race (and know who has earned their ribbons).  On your own running should be in at least one-half miles increments.  The schedule below allows for a possible rainout practice.  If multiple practices are cancelled, additional on-your-own running miles will be assigned.

 

This schedule is designed to build the child up to running the 5k (3.1 mile) mile Fun Run.  Over-training could be harmful to your child’s body.
